"Salmonella Outbreak in Minnesota Linked to Chipotle Restaurants," read the headline on Yahoo.

We like Chipotle. And Minnesota. So - as smart consumers of data - what are we supposed to do?

Well, as you'll read about in our book (coming April 2016!), many cases of food contamination seem to originate in Minnesota. So what's going on in the Land of 10,000 Lakes?

If you dig further into the data - as another article in Yahoo did - you'll learn that many food outbreaks are linked to Minnesota simply because their health department is really good at catching them early. They have better equipment. They do in-depth interviews. They work quickly.

So the next time you hear about a food outbreak happening in Minnesota (or anywhere else), see if it's caused by something happening in the North Star State - or if it's simply because officials there found it first.
